ALMOST 900 motorists were caught speeding in road works in Suffolk in a five-week period.

Road safety group Suffolk SafeCam said 876 drivers had broken the speed limit along a short stretch of the A12 at Bucklesham.

Guy McGregor, Suffolk County Council's portfolio holder for roads and transport, said: “This number of offences is totally unacceptable.

“Most drivers understand why reduced speed limits are in place but unfortunately there are always some who feel that the rules don't apply to them.

“The traffic management in place is there for good reason, to protect our workers from danger and to keep the public safe as they drive through the road works.”

Further road works are planned on the westbound carriageway of the A14 on the Orwell Bridge this weekend and a 50mph speed limit will be in place for 24 hours a day.

Cameras which check average speed over the distance will be installed for the entire length of the road works.
