A 21-year-old man has drowned after getting into difficulties while swimming in an Essex river.
Coastguards received a number of 999 calls from people who reported seeing the man disappear under the water in the River Crouch at around 2.30pm yesterday.
He was last spotted off the shore near the Anchor pub in Hullbridge.
It triggered a massive search involving police officers on the ground, a police helicopter, an air ambulance, the RAF search and rescue helicopter from Wattisham Airfield in Suffolk, inshore lifeboats and the coastguard.
The man's body was found a short distance from where he was last seen.
Further details of the victim are not known at this stage.
