Ball has now been barred from Britain's roads for three years, but he remains free to walk the streets.

The lock gate keeper had already been convicted for being over the limit in 1991 and 1994.

Yet despite his apparent contempt for the drink driving law, magistrates agreed with a probation report recommending a community penalty – even though he was driving without insurance and a licence when police pulled him over in November.
