A DRUNK mother who bit a policeman on the leg as her child lay in a pram nearby has admitted being drunk in charge of her baby.

Jennifer Greenwood, 35, apologised for her behaviour following the nine-hour drinking binge and said: “I had been upset, I was under real stress. I went crazy.”

Greenwood had drunk two bottles of wine before she fell into the road while walking along Felixstowe Road in Ipswich.

She had been struggling to push the baby boy's pram before she fell into the street. Police spotted her lying in the road, although the one-year-old had stayed in the pram.

When the officers began to speak to her she forced her head up to the top of one officer's legs and bit the top of his left inner thigh, causing a sharp pain.

Greenwood's baby was put in the care of friends when she was arrested on October 10 but to her relief they were reunited the following day.

“It was horrible to have him taken away from me, but I got my boy back,” she said.

“He was stressed out and crying but he is a happy boy normally.”

Greenwood, originally from Poland but now living in Alan Road, off Felixstowe Road, had admitted being drunk in charge of a child, assaulting a police officer and breaching public order at an earlier hearing on October 19.

She had become upset after her ex-partner had appeared at Ipswich Crown Court accused of assaulting her, causing actual bodily harm.

She feared he would be sent to jail - although he was given a probation order eventually - and had spent the day drinking.

The single mum, a member of Elim Pentecostal Church in Ipswich, said the incident had been out of character and added: “The Devil chooses some horrible things for people.”

Greenwood had forced her fingernail into Pc Colin Clack's left thumb, leaving him with a cut as well as a bite mark and bruising to the side of his thigh. She later sent him a written apology.

She admitted drinking too much and said the officers had been taken by surprise.

“Everything just got out of hand. I don't know where the police came from. I don't go around biting people. I got myself in a big mess. It is embarrassing, I am sorry.”

And she added, jokingly: “Maybe they should have given me a muzzle and put me in the dog pound.”

At South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Wednesday Greenwood was told to pay Pc Clack £50 compensation and was ordered to do 80 hours unpaid work.
