Work has begun on transforming the former East of England Co-op funeral service in Cauldwell Hall Road into five family homes, as the firm announces plans for further housebuilding in 2018.

Great Blakenham firm Elliston, Steady and Hawes has been awarded the contract to create the five homes, which are due to be available to rent from Spring 2018.

The East of England Co-op has already completed projects in Harwich and Colchester, with two further sites in Woodbridge and Rushmere St Andrew set for development next year.

Nick Denny, joint chief executive for the East of England Co-op, said: “We’re very pleased to be working with Elliston, Steady and Hawes on new homes for local families.

“As a local business, we’re very proud to be able to support other businesses from East Anglia, protecting and creating jobs for local people.”

The development was first announced earlier this year as part of the Co-op’s portfolio of regeneration projects across Ipswich which also included the former department store in Carr Street and expansion at Rosehill Retail Park.
