THIS frail pensioner survived air attacks in the Second World War yet she now lives in fear in her own home.

The 85-year-old – who wants to remain nameless for fear of repercussions – has been targeted twice by vandals.

Each time thugs smashed the widow's front window on a Saturday night scattering shards of glass in her front room.

"Before I never had any trouble," said the terrified church-goer. "I am scared. I am afraid of every Saturday night.

"I am worried about what will happen and what I will find in the morning. I just don't know what to do."

The first time it happened, about 18 months ago, the pensioner was sitting reading when the window just feet away from her was shattered spreading glass all over the floor and furniture.

Then last Saturday thugs targeted the elderly lady's Stowmarket home again – this time as she slept.

This latest attack on her home has landed this pillar of the community with a £111.63 bill for the pane of glass – the second time she had to shell out to repair the damage.

She came downstairs to see the wreckage scattered all over the sitting room floor.

"I didn't hear anything this time," said the popular pensioner, a former ballet teacher.

"I went to bed about midnight and got up at 7.30 am to go to church. I made a cup of tea and saw the window.

"The first time it was the top pane on the left. I paid for it. I can't remember what it cost the first time. I had insurance but you have to pay £50 so I thought I better just leave it.

"This time it was the bottom one. There was glass everywhere – on the floor, chair and everything."

She contacted her neighbours in Bury Road who immediately came to her aid.

They cleared the glass from the floor and contacted the glazier who repaired the window and police were informed.

But as Saturday night approaches again the pensioner is terrified there could be a repeat.

"There have been at least two places it has happened to in the area. I don't know why people do this - I suppose it is an easy window to get at because it is a large pane.

"These yobs don't appear to have a brain at all. They drunk, but where do they get the money?"

"I do think the nightclubs are to blame. I think it is a sign of the times. It is not the world that we all knew either before the war or after."

A police spokeswoman confirmed that police were investigating a report of criminal damage at an address in Bury Street which happened overnight between 11pm on March 9 and 7.30am on March 10. Anyone with information should call Stowmarket police on 01473 613500.
