FIREFIGHTERS were called to the sea front at Felixstowe today after flames swept through a fish and chip shop.

Crews from Felixstowe and Ipswich were dispatched to Sea Road at just after 10.35am to tackle the blaze at the Seaview Fish Bar.

It is believed the fire started a the fish fryer.

Assistant divisional officer Andy Nunn, who led the fire service's operation, said when oil was added to the fryer, flames flared up.

He said the whole shop had been involved in the fire.

The adjoining buildings, a snooker hall and an amusement arcade, were filled with smoke as a result.

Dawn Barrett, the owner of the fish bar, said it was her father who had been at the shop when the fire started.

She said: “My father is shaken up. There was quite a lot of damage because of the fire.”

In all, 18 firefighters fought the blaze.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two fire engines from Felixstowe and one from the Princes Street station in Ipswich had been sent to the fire.
