A Diwali Bollywood dinner and dance is being held at the Corn Exchange in Ipswich as part of the Hindu festival of lights.

The Diwali Dinner and Dance event, open to all members of the public, is being organised by the Ipswich and Suffolk Indian Association.

The event includes a welcome drink, Bollywood music and dancing, and a three-course meal on Saturday, October 21.

Diwali, one of Hinduism’s most important festivals, is dedicated to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, and symbolises the victory of good over evil.

Poli Mohan, chairwoman of organisers the Ipswich and Suffolk Indian Association, said: “Diwali is celebrated all over the world and is not only for Hindus.

“The event is open to everybody; the whole community.

“It’s a very big event and lots of people have been asking us for the date. We are really looking forward to it.”

The event, now in its third year, attracted more than 240 people last year.

An event spokesman added: “The evening will be packed with Bollywood music and dancing with DJ Kash and Radika Maya, Bollywood choreographer and entertainer, a welcome drink, and an Indian three-course meal to hopefully make it a truly enjoyable night for all.”

Diwali starts on Wednesday, October 18 this year and lasts for five days.

Mrs Mohan added: “Our event was absolutely brilliant last year.

“It was very successful, from the entertainment to the set-up of the hall and the food, and we had very positive comments.

“There will be a lot of entertainment again this year. The Bollywood choreographer will show people the moves. It is a bit like a workshop. There is also the welcome drink and the three-course meal.”

The event starts at 7pm on Saturday, October 21 and finishes at midnight.

Tickets cost £23 for adults, £13 for under-13s, and £6 for children aged under five.

Tickets are available at the Ipswich Regent box office on 01473 433100, online at www.ipswichcornexchange.com, or in person at the Ipswich Tourist Information Centre.

Tickets are limited and will not be available on the door on the night.
