A FLYPAST by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was among the highlights as Martlesham Heath's historic contribution to military and civil aviation was commemorated.

A special ceremony was held to dedicate a new 9,000 memorial in Barrack Square which outlines the significant role played.

Formed in 1917, Martlesham Heath was once one of most important RAF stations in the world - where the Spitfire was put through its paces and where many other warplanes had their final trials before battle.

Civilian jet airliners were also tested, the pioneering work done at Martlesham ensuring our safety today.

Hundreds of people witnessed Sunday's event, which was organised by the Martlesham Heath Aviation Society.
