A GREIVING community has today helped two devastated Ipswich families to meet the cost of buying headstones for two best friends who were killed in an horrific car accident.

Residents of the Dickins Road area of Ipswich put on their football boots and turned out for a fundraising football match in Chantry Park to remember Dwayne Hasnip, 19, of Allenby Road, and Daniel Prescott, 22, of Dombey Road, who died on October 1.

Mr Hasnip and Mr Prescott died when the Volkswagen Golf they were travelling in careered into the central reservation on the A12 near Holton St Mary.

The deaths of the two men shocked the tight-knit community and prompted their friends to organise the match as a way of helping their families pay for the headstones.

The players in yesterday's game hope to have raised more than £500 for the families.

Tracey Rose, of Copperfield Road, was one of those who organised the event.

She said: “Some of us mums used to come down to the park and offer the boys support when they were playing football.

“When we heard what happened we just wanted to be able to help out. This seemed like a fitting way to help raise some funds for their families and for the community to enjoy themselves too.

“We also thought it would be good for the mums of the estate to get some exercise and to show these boys a thing or two.

“The lads were very well-known on our estate and Daniel was a neighbour of ours. The community wanted to do something for their memory.”

More than 100 supporters turned out for the event, which saw the male players battle an all-girls' team made up of mothers, daughters and grandmothers. There was even a male goalie dressed in drag.

The football game came just two days after mourners packed St Matthew's Church in Ipswich for a joint funeral for Mr Prescott and Mr Hasnip.
