Thousands lined the streets of Mendlesham as the historic village’s annual fair brought a sun-drenched community together.

Belly dancers, zumba dancing and Morris men were just some of the attractions on display at the Mendlesham Street Fair yesterday.

An assortment of art, craft and game stalls were sprinkled across the village while entertainer Steve Sausage returned to put in another performance.

The event, which first took place in 1980, was organised by Mendlesham Community Council and saw many village shops and the village pubs open up all day.

Carolyn Triscott, chair of Mendlesham Community Council and street fayre committee, described the street fair as a “great success”.

“It was a brilliant day,” she said. “I would say around 3,000 people turned up to enjoy the magnificent street fair, which had around 40 stalls for everyone to enjoy.

“We have had birds of prey demonstrations, top comedians and armoury at the church displays.

“We also had a hog roast which proved to be very popular.

“It has been an excellent team-effort to put on the historic Mendlesham street fair, which first began back in 1980.

“It’s great the community comes together and people turn up in their thousands to show their support.”

The Stowmarket Boys Brigade kicked off proceedings at noonbefore the street fair began in earnest, while refreshments were provided throughout the day by church members.
