DAREDEVILS are today being called to launch themselves off a tower block on a zip slide to raise money for charity.

St Elizabeth Hospice is inviting people to take the plunge from the top of the Suffolk New College tower block in Ipswich on Saturday, April 25.

The event is back following popular demand after last year's charity day at Ipswich Town Football Club. The college's tower block is due to be knocked down later this year so it will be the only chance to take advantage of this opportunity.

Patsy Johnson, events co-ordinator at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “We are so excited to be able to offer people this 'once in a lifetime' opportunity. Whether you are a former student, a current student or just fancy doing something exhilarating, this zip slide will be fast, furious and frightening.

“This year is St Elizabeth Hospice's 20th anniversary year and we hope that the local community will get involved in the zip slide to help us raise the 5.2 million required to run our services this year.”

Mary Gleave, associate principal at Suffolk New College, said: “It is the end of an era for the college as the main block was built in 1959. The fact that the building is being demolished reflects the changing times and our development in the local area. We are delighted to be involved with a local charity like St Elizabeth Hospice and put the building to excellent use before it is gone.”

The registration fee for the zip slide is 20 and participants have to raise around 100 in sponsorship. Participants should be over 14 years old and parental consent is needed if you are under 17 years old. There is a minimum weight restriction of six stone or 38kg and maximum of 16 stone or 102kg.
