ONE grateful motorist is today saying a big “thank you” to two good Samaritans who spent hours in the freezing cold last night ensuring more than 15 motorists made it home.

John Garrard, of Kingston Road, was taking his mother-in-law home in the blustery blizzards late last night.

As he turned back to travel home he reached Belmont Road but the heavy snow falling was causing chaos for drivers, with dozens getting stuck.

But thanks to the selfless hard work of two young lads, Mr Garrard and a handful of other stranded motorists safely made it home.

With two to three inches of snow already settled by around 11pm on Belmont Road, the icy conditions made it very difficult for people to get their cars moving.

“There were these two lads, they must have been in their early 20s, just pushing car after car out of the deep snow.

“They said they had already done 10 cars by the time they got to me at about midnight, and they showed no signs of leaving then. I got stuck about three times on the way home and to be honest if they hadn't been there I would not have made it up the hill.

“They were just standing in the road helping anyone they could see who needed help. They must have been there for hours, through the heaviest of the snowfalls.”

Mr Garrard added: “As I got moving I couldn't stop so I didn't get the chance to say thank you to them.

“They helped me get home, if they hadn't helped me out I would have spent a very cold night in my freezing car.

“It is just nice to see there is a great sense of community spirit in this day and age.”
