A train cancelled due to a suspected collision with a dog in fact hit a deer near Ipswich, Greater Anglia have confirmed.

The incident has happened during cancellations caused by overrunning rail improvements in London.

The train was heading towards London Liverpool Street when the deer was hit.

A Greater Anglia spokesman said: “One service was terminated early and one train was cancelled this morning after a train hit an animal near Ipswich.

“The 05.00 Norwich to London Liverpool Street service was terminated at Ipswich and the 07.30 London Liverpool Street to Norwich was cancelled. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

Passengers who were delayed for more than 30 minutes can claim delay repay compensation on the Greater Anglia website.Initial reports had said that it was suspected the train had struck a dog and that the train had continued to London Liverpool Street before terminating.
