PEOPLE have been evacuated from their homes after a huge field blaze spread to a nearby residential area.

Crews from six pumps are currently using four hose reel jets to fight a 50 acre blaze engulfing crops off Coxhall Lane, Tattingstone.

Pc Jim Hurden said: “My colleague and I were on patrol in Ipswich when we saw the plume of smoke and came over.

“It started in the corner of a field but soon spread and got close to two cottages.

“It started to cover a large area of the field and while firefighters were tackling it near to the cottages it spread closer to other homes.”

A fire service spokesman said the fire had spread to a nearby garden as well as a vehicle and trailer.

Onlookers reported seeing huge plumes of smoke clearly visible from the A12.

Firefighters were called to the scene at around 12.41pm.
