A TOP Suffolk hotel was given the all-clear today after dozens of diners fell ill after attending an event at the venue.

Environmental health officers were called in to investigate after people reported suffering a severe bout of diarrhoea and vomiting following the annual dinner of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers at the Hotel Elizabeth Orwell in Felixstowe.

But owners of the hotel have now been told the illness was not food-related.

The good news was given to Richard Cattermole, of Elizabeth Hotels Ltd.

He said: “We have been told it was not food-related at all - we understand it was some kind of fever which appears to have spread very quickly among some of the people at the event.

“I understand there were 23 people affected and they were on two tables.”

Suffolk Coastal officers worked with the Suffolk Office of the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Health Protection Unit and the Suffolk Primary Care Trust on the investigation.

They stressed all along that while there had been allegations of food poisoning it could be another cause.
