A huge party will be held in a town park to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch - and you’re all invited.

Community leaders have revealed they are preparing for a massive bash in Christchurch Park, with 10,000 free tickets being made available for Ipswich residents.

And although it is thought demand for places at the event on July 5 will easily outstrip demand, organisers are urging everyone to come and see the torch and enjoy the atmosphere in the park.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) will be providing entertainment at the party and Ipswich Borough Council will be providing the space for the party.

A spokesman for the council said: “We appreciate there will be a huge demand for these tickets but hope that if you are unsuccessful in getting a ticket you will still come and see the torch and enjoy the atmosphere in the Park where there will be other activities and the opportunity to see the show on a large screen.”

Details of the entertainment on show at the party has not yet been revealed by LOCOG. However the council have revealed local performing groups will be lining the torch procession to provide in ‘entertainment hotspots’.

A Community Village is also being set up for charities and sports clubs in the area to showcase their work.

The Olympic Torch will be arriving at the waterfront at about 6.15pm on July 5 and will stop the night at Christchurch Park. The torch will then be taken away from Christchurch Mansion on July 6 and travel through the town centre before it leaves Suffolk.

Details on when the tickets will be available are currently not available but it is hoped more information will available in the next few weeks.

The Olympic party comes as the Star’s I Love Ipswich campaign continues to shout about the great things in the town and encourages residents to take pride in Ipswich.
