TEN suspected illegal immigrants were today being detained at an East Anglian port after arriving in the region on board a yacht.
The Asian nationals were stopped at Bawdsey, near Woodbridge, at about 7.30pm yesterday, an Immigration Service official confirmed.
It is believed three people were detained as they tried to make their way onto the shore in a small boat, while another seven people were arrested aboard a larger boat nearby.
Coastguards spotted the vessel before it arrived on the Suffolk beach and immediately alerted the police.
The ten were taken to a detention centre at Harwich Port, where they remained last night.
Their yacht was towed to Shotley Marina where it has been detained.
A Suffolk police spokesman said the 10 had been arrested for immigration-related offences.
