A garden project run by a Suffolk charity has been presented with a national award.

Ipswich based ActivLives’ project was awarded the Best Community Garden accolade at the Groundwork Community Awards.

The Suffolk based charity have two gardens in Ipswich as part of their ActivGardens project.

One site is based at the Maidenhall Allotments and the other at Chantry Walled Garden in Chantry Park.

The group also have other growing projects around the town and elsewhere in Suffolk.

ActivLives development manager, Susannah Robirosa said the charity were excited to recognised in this way.

She said: “ActivLives is absolutely delighted to be honoured at a national level.

“It is a fitting tribute to almost 10 years of hard work by all our staff and volunteers, who have built vibrant community gardens and facilities for everyone to enjoy. We will certainly be celebrating our next birthday. Onwards and upwards!”

The gardens host a number of events across the year as well as hosting visits for schools, garden clubs and community groups.

Chantry Academy Vice Principal, Keith Greenwood, said: “Students at Chantry Academy have thoroughly enjoyed their sessions at activgardens. This work has given selected students an opportunity to work and learn in a different environment, helping them with social skills and supporting them in managing their interactions with different people.

“The physical element combined with working in the fresh air and open spaces provides much needed respite from the typical 21st Century school experience. The students and staff accompanying them can’t wait for each session to come along!”

Emily Thorrington, a learning mentor at Ipswich Academy added: “It’s a breath of fresh air. inclusive and engaging for the most challenging. Something they talk about for the rest of the day and look forward to all week.”

The coincide with their success ActivLives are launching a new supporter scheme called ActivFriends.

Julie Stoke CEO of ActivLives said: “Fundraising, becoming an ActivFriend or volunteering are all ways you can help and every penny will stay in Suffolk and support our charity and this award winning project.”
