Urgent action is needed on the site of a former ice cream factory in Ipswich, it has been warned.

Ipswich Borough Council has announced it is pursuing enforcement action over the former Peters Ice Cream facility in Grimwade Street, as a result of the poor state of the buildings.

An update in the council’s latest enforcement action report said that the site, which now partly contains a temporary car wash business, has “deteriorated significantly in recent years”.

It added: “Planning enforcement has been actively trying to trace the current owner, without success, with a view to seeking urgent improvements to the site.

“IBC fraud investigators have been tasked with locating the owner although enquiries are likely to be protracted meaning enforcement action will be delayed.”

Peters vacated the factory in the early 2000s after deciding to relocated to Needham Market, before the building became a haven for street drinkers.

In May 2012 it was snapped up at auction by an anonymous developer for £271,000, but has not had a permanent use.
