A FOOTBALL club chairman today condemned the actions of thieves who broke into Ipswich Wanderers’ clubhouse and caused damage before making off with alcohol and cash.

Police have launched an investigation into the raid at the Humber Doucy Lane ground after the club’s safe, which contained about 1,000, and alcohol were stolen on Thursday night.

The thieves also tried to steal two kegs of beer and a plasma screen TV, all of which which were later found outside the building.

Wanderers chairman Terry Fenwick said the club had been shocked by the crime.

“We are devastated because not only have the club had money stolen, but we can’t believe that somebody would do this to a club like ours,” he said.

“Those who would commit such a horrible crime can only be described as morons and I beg anybody who knows anything about what happened to contact the police.”

The clubhouse is fitted with a security alarm but it was damaged during the break-in.

There was more bad news for the club at the weekend when Wanderers’ home game against Great Yarmouth Town on Saturday had to be abandoned during the match because of floodlight failure.

Wanderers had been winning 3-0 at the time.

The Thurlow Nunn Division One match will have to replayed at a later date.

Despite the theft, Mr Fenwick was quick to praise members of the club who have helped since news of the break-in spread. He revealed the players have donated their wages to the club and committee members also spent Friday helping with repairs to the clubhouse.

If you have any information about the theft, call Suffolk police on 101.
