Some parks staff employed by Ipswich Council have taken on a new role during the big freeze – acting as chauffeurs for health professionals in their 4x4 vehicles.

The borough has a small number 4x4 vehicles that are usually used to access parks in the town – but they have been offered to the Suffolk Resilience Forum – complete with drivers.

On Thursday morning they took a call from the health centre in Landseer Road who needed staff to get to Hadleigh and Bildeston to visit patients in their own homes – with Greenways team manager James Baker at the wheel.

Deputy council leader Bryony Rudkin said: “We were more than happy to help and have other staff and vehicles on standby. Some roads are impassable to anything other than a 4x4.

“Our parks service has also supplied two vehicles to our HEARS emergency response team to ensure our staff can get to the vulnerable.”
