Officers went to a house in Macaulay Road, Ipswich, just after 12.40pm yesterday following a call from a member of the public and made the grim discovery.

Late last night police scaled down their inquiries into the death of the man, believed to be in his 30s, following the results from a post mortem.

A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said they would not be releasing details of the man or how he had died until all next of kin had been informed.

Yesterday the two-storey semi-detached house on the Whitton Estate in the northern area of Ipswich was cordoned off as forensic officers examined the property.

Residents living nearby spoke of their shock on hearing of the man's death and one neighbour said he had known the person who had apparently been feeling depressed recently.

A woman living nearby said: "He always said hello, but he was one who always kept himself to himself."

Another resident in a neighbouring street said: "It's very sad. We never knew him but he would always say 'Hi'.

"He never had any loud music playing or anything like that. There was once some kids who were knocking on people's doors and then running away - he spoke to them and they stopped."
