IPSWICH: It’s the old name for the county town, and despite our online April Fool yesterday there are no plans to bring Gipswich (or any other spelling) back into common use.
We told readers of our website www.ipswichstar.co.uk that an obscure government quango had found up to 2.5 million which would become available if the town reverted to its Anglo-Saxon name.
Sadly that money, and the quango, does not exist – the clue was there when we quoted an official describing Ip-Roll as an Oaf organisation!
MP Ben Gummer and Labour council leader David Ellesmere were in on the joke – and we can safely say now that all the stories in the Star are true.
