A block of flats was evacuated and a woman arrested after a fire in Ipswich this afternoon.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue was alerted to multiple reports around 12.40pn of smoke and flames billowing from a top for flat at Birkfield Drive.

Two crews from Princes Street were first to attend the blaze, however another four were sent following further reports of people trapped inside the property.

A spokesman for the service said all people were accounted for by 1.10pm and the fire was out by 2.20pm.

Suffolk Constabulary later arrested a 51-year-old woman nearby on suspicion of arson.
