IPSWICH is today in line for a significant sporting and economic boost after an Olympic delegation picked the town as a potential base for the London 2012 games.

Top athletes from Azerbaijan will swoop into Suffolk tomorrow ahead of a week-long stay where they will sample Ipswich's swimming and fitness facilities.

And if they like what they see, borough chiefs expect the delegation to select the town as their Olympic HQ during the games in three years' time.

The council has been in talks with the Azerbaijani National Olympic Committee for months to negotiate the visit.

Councillor Judy Terry said: “We intend to show these athletes that Ipswich can provide the facilities, environment and welcome that any team preparing for the Olympics needs.

“This would not only be a sporting boost for the area but also have important economic and tourism spin-off, too.”
