Ipswich nightclub Liquid & Envy is undergoing a £650,000 refurbishment, including a new name.

Ipswich Star: Martin Hoy and Tony Casey, co-owners of Shamrock.Martin Hoy and Tony Casey, co-owners of Shamrock.

After 17 years in the town, Liquid & Envy will be renamed Unit 17 when it reopens on July 24.

Liquid officially closed its doors on Sunday but Envy will be open every Saturday until June 27 when it will also shut until the club opens in July.

The venue is looking to build on its existing team of 20 and recruit a further 50 full and part-time employees working across a number of areas including the bar, hospitality and sales.

The new club will feature three distinctive zones; ‘Vinyl’ (a retro room playing party and club classics), an R&B room and a main dance arena.

Unit 17’s general manager Glen Freeman said: “Liquid & Envy has been part of Ipswich’s nightlife for 17 years, but it’s time to move on.

“With Unit 17 we are taking clubbing to the next level, offering the very best light and sound show in the region, with fantastic service and world class DJs and entertainment.

“For now though, it’s business as usual at Envy which will continue to offer a great place to go for a night out.”

Unit 17 will trade Thursday, Friday and Saturday plus Bank Holidays with doors opening at 9pm.

A new cocktail menu will also be introduced, with the opportunity for guests to enjoy cocktail making masterclasses.

There will also be table service throughout the venue for pre-bookable booths and private areas to host parties.

Mr Freeman, who started his nightclub career as a front of house manager in 1997, added: “Unit 17 is going to be hottest ticket in town, so we want people who share our passion for delivering great experiences and want to be part of this new era.”

Meanwhile, the former Ollie’s cocktail bar in Ipswich has been given a new lease of life after three years of closure.

The Tacket Street property has been refurbished by the owners of KC’s nightclub on Cornhill as a “relaxed” bar lounge called, Shamrock.

The venue, which has been renovated with three upstairs flats that will go up for rent in one month’s time, officially opened its doors on Saturday. Martin Hoy and Tony Casey took over the former Betty’s nightclub two years ago, and their latest venture will be run by Irishman, Mr Casey.

The pair have put more than £100,000 into refurbishing the building, which Mr Hoy said was falling apart when they collected the keys in January.

“I just hope the people of Ipswich will support the pub and the work we have put into bringing an old building back to life,” Mr Hoy added.

“In the week it will have nice relaxed background music where people can still talk and then we will change the music to suit the atmosphere at the weekends.”
