Ipswich: Man is due to appear in court over handbag theft

A MAN has been charged with stealing a woman’s handbag as she sat on a bench.

Geavaise Deaves, 20, of Chaucer Road, Ipswich, was arrested and charged yesterday with theft and has been bailed to appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on July 20.

His arrest followed an incident in Dogs Head Street, Ipswich, which occurred between 4.30pm and 5pm yesterday.

A 31-year-old woman was sat on a bench at the rear of the Buttermarket when the man sat next to her jumped up, stole her handbag and ran off.

A police spokeswoman said the arrest of Deaves followed good work by a number of members of the public who gave chase and detained the man until police arrived.
