Ian Brown, 27, of Benacre Road admitted causing Matthew Scannel grievous bodily harm.
The incident happened in an Ipswich night club when Brown's girlfriend beckoned over Mr Scannel who she recognised from school.
John Akast prosecuting at Ipswich Crown Court, said Brown "scowled at Scannel and then got very angry quickly attacking him, hitting him with a bottle on the right side of his face, the bottle broke cutting Mr Scannel near his eye." The court heard that Mr Scannel is likely to remain scarred for life.
Simon Spence mitigating for Brown said his client "had shown deep remorse," and is a "law abiding member of society when he is sober".
The court heard that Brown who has a previous record for violence had considered Mr Scannel a friend and he could not understand why he had reacted so violently.
