AN urgent investigation is under way today after a court blunder saw documents and records from up to 50 court cases sent to an Ipswich businessman.

Among the items received by shocked Christopher Robinson were letters containing personal details, judgments and even cheques from Northampton Combined Court.

The 47-year-old, of Humber Doucy Lane, Ipswich, was expecting to be sent documents from the court after his divorce case was thrown out because he failed to file documents in time.

He claims he did send documents to the court on time and is now questioning whether court officials even saw them after the mistake.

He said: “I have been absolutely floored by this, my paper work wasn’t even stamped.

“There are personal cheques in there, telephone numbers, there’s all sorts of stuff. There is even a letter from a chap who is distressed about someone harassing him.

“This is people’s lives they are messing with.

“I need to get my case looked at again.”

The documents were first seen by Mr Robinson on Tuesday.

They also contain details of different companies and organisations.

He said he notified the court as soon as he realised what had happened but described the attitude of staff to the blunder as being “uninterested and blasé”.

Mr Robinson was later contacted and told that the documents would need to be retrieved immediately.

A spokeswoman for Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service confirmed documents containing personal data had been sent to Mr Robinson in error.

She added: “HMCTS takes the security of personal data very seriously. We are urgently investigating the circumstances of this incident.

“HMCTS has apologised to the individual concerned and is taking immediate steps to recover the documents.”
