The Orwell Bridge was closed for more than an hour overnight as police talked down a man who was threatening to jump off it.
Police were called by a passing motorist at 1.05am saying that someone was standing in the middle of the bridge looking over the edge.
When officers arrived at the scene, they started negotiating with a 49-year-old man and called for trained negotiators.
While the bridge was closed, diversions were put in place at the Copdock Interchange and Junction 57 at Nacton.
The man was talked down and taken to the Woodlands Unit at Ipswich Hospital at about 2.40am, with the bridge reopening shortly after.
