The first steel framework for the new Crown multi-storey car park in Ipswich town centre is due to arrive early in September.
Until now the construction work has concentrated on preparing the ground and digging piles to be reading for the steel frames.
The new 546-space park is costing £5.5m to put up and should be open in January next year – some spaces should be available for the Christmas shopping season from November.
The park is being built on the site of the former Crown Car Park that had to be demolished in 2010 after it was found to be suffering from concrete cancer that could no longer be treated – that had been built in the early 1970s and was the largest car park in the town.
Although the new building will not fill the whole space of the former park, it could be extended in future years if there is enough demand from shoppers and other visitors to the town over the next few years.
