Suffolk’s Katherine Rednall says it would “mean everything” to usurp dad John’s Lawn Bowls achievements and win a Commonwealth Games medal on the Gold Coast.

John, 54, represented England at the 1994 Games in Victoria, as part of the Men’s Fours that missed out on a bronze medal by a solitary point.

Seventeen months later Katherine was born, and now she is set to follow in her dad’s footsteps and represent England on the lawns of Australia in the women’s singles and triples competitions.

And with her parents watching on, Katherine – of Felixstowe & Suffolk Bowls Club – is going for gold.

The 22-year-old, from Stowmarket, said: “It would mean everything to be on the podium. That’s what you come here for.

“You put the time and the effort in and that’s hopefully the end result.

“My mum and dad are coming out here, most of us have family members out here with us, so it will be brilliant to have them for support.”

Rednall is no stranger to glory, having become the youngest ever World Indoor champion at the age of 18.

That success has been followed by the mixed pairs title in 2016, while she is the reigning singles champion have followed up her 2017 success with victory over Norwich’s Rebecca Field in January.

Rednall admits she does not know quite how her two weeks in Down Under will pan out, but is relishing the experiences that lie ahead.

She added: “I’m absolutely buzzing for it.

“It’s my first Commonwealth Games, so I don’t really know what to expect, but I’m going to just take it as it comes.

“I watched the guys in Glasgow at the last one and it was fantastic, the atmosphere looked brilliant.

“For us, in Lawn Bowls, it’s as big as it gets.”

Suffolk has several other athletes in action in Australia - George Pinner, Harry Martin and Hannah Martin (all hockey), Callum Wilkinson and Katy Sealy (athletics) and Sandy Walker (shooting).
