A SUFFOLK police officer is today under investigation after he was caught speeding 100mph on the A14 because he did not want to be late for work.

Pc Matthew Stott, of Kingfisher Way, Stowmarket, admitted driving his Vauxhall Vectra 30mph over the speed limit on the A14 at Bucklesham at 9am on May 6.

The court heard that Stott, who has been an officer with the Suffolk Constabulary for 20 years, was spotted going 100mph by a Suffolk SafeCam van, which was parked in the lay by.

Ben Gordon, mitigating on his behalf, said: “He was on his way to work in the morning. Due to difficulties he was suffering at the time, he was desperate not to be late for work. He had been suffering stress-related problems.

“He regrets what has happened. He accepts his judgement was wrong.”

The father of three works in the Bury St Edmunds neighbourhood response team, which deals with any issues that crop up in the area, including 999 calls.

The court heard that he is still serving with the force at the moment. It was also heard that he had no points on his driver's licence.

A Suffolk Police spokeswoman said: “There will be an internal investigation and so we cannot comment further at this stage.”

Chairman of the magistrates bench Anne Walker, said: “We have taken into account your early guilty plea.”

Magistrates decided to fine him 320 and gave him six points on his driver's licence. He was also ordered to pay 85 in prosecution costs and 15 as a victim surcharge.
