LIBERAL Democrats today gained a seat on the county council after winning the by-election caused by the resignation of disgraced councillor Ben Redsell.

Mr Redsell resigned his seats on Suffolk Coastal District Council, Woodbridge Town Council and Suffolk County Council in June after being sentenced to a three-year community supervision order at Norwich Crown Court.

Although he was an Independent at the end of his time on the councils, he had been elected as a Conservative.

The Woodbridge by-election was won by Liberal Democrat candidate Caroline Page with 970 votes.

Conservative Nigel Barratt, former district councillor, was second with 826, former Woodbridge mayor Michael Weaver, standing as an Independent, third with 378, and former district council chairman Roy Burgon, Labour, fourth with 147.
