Children enjoyed games of Quidditch on school playgrounds yesterday and last night discussed the popular J K Rowling novels at libraries.

Eleven libraries in Suffolk held Harry Potter Book Night events, with “many” selling out, illustrating the “lasting popularity” of the fantasy novels, a Suffolk Libraries spokesman said.

Here is a list of library events:

Gainsborough Community Library in Ipswich – Fancy dress, games and activities for children 8-14 years (under 8s are welcome with an adult), from 3.30pm to 5pm.

Ipswich County Library – 4.30pm to 6pm. Fancy dress, potion making, spell casting, crafts and a quiz.

Ipswich County Library are also running a Harry Potter competition to design a Patronus Charm – a powerful defensive charm from the famous books which usually takes the form of an animal. The competition runs until Wednesday 17 February and is linked to the library’s Harry Potter event. The competition is aimed at children in the two age groups of 4-7 and 8-14. The idea is to draw a picture of the charm and write 140 words about it. You can pick up an entry form at the library and staff will be conjuring up prizes for the winners!

An evening of storytelling and magical activities, around 60 children will be making potions, being sorted into their Hogwarts house, choosing a wand, making wizarding refreshments and much more. Local actors will be dressing up as characters from the books and everyone taking part is being invited to dress up.

Kesgrave Library – 6pm to 8pm. Games, activities, book readings, hot chocolate and marshmallows. Come along in fancy dress and help staff celebrate!

Southwold Library – 6pm and 7pm. Fancy dress competition, crafts, games, sorting hat and more! All children and parents are welcome.

Rosehill Library in Ipswich – Fancy dress, games and activities. Stowmarket – Fancy dress and games.

The Suffolk Libraries spokesman added: “The Harry Potter theme is brilliant for a library event as there are so many well-known characters. Children and adults can dress up as and it really inspires the imagination with potion-making, wizard duels, sorting hat games and many more activities which children will enjoy.

“There has been a lot of excitement leading up to the event. Plus of course it’s a great way to introduce children to their local library and will hopefully inspire a new generation of children to discover the books and films, which are all available to borrow from the library of course.”
