A 21-year-old man has been charged with drink-driving after a car crashed into a bus shelter on the outskirts of Ipswich town centre today.

The collision occurred in Woodbridge Road near the Mulberry Tree public house at 2.50am.

Police arrived to find a Renault Megane had collided with a bus shelter, causing considerable damage.

A short time later two males were stopped by officers in Orchard Street.

One was arrested and taken to Martlesham police investigation centre to be interviewed in connection with the accident.

This afternoon Anne-Marie Breach, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary, said the male has been charged with driving with excess alcohol.

Jack Butcher, 21, of Dover Road, Ipswich, was released on bail after being charged.

He is alleged to have had 57 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mcgs.

Butcher is now due to make his first appearance on the charge at South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court in Ipswich on March 1.
