A 40-YEAR-OLD man is in custody today after armed police were called to Norwich city centre.
He was arrested last night after police were called to Princes Street at 7pm.
A member of the public had reported seeing a man with what appeared to be a handgun.
Police and police dog units were dispatched to the scene and at 7.45pm a man was arrested on suspicion of firearms offences. A plastic toy gun was recovered by officers.
Police spokeswoman Beth Manning said: “The witness did exactly the right thing by calling police as soon as her suspicions were raised. It is only those with specialist firearms knowledge who could distinguish a genuine firearm from a replica.
“We take all firearms offences seriously and anyone in possession of a replica firearm should know that, for the safety of officers and the public, the police response will always be based on the assumption that it is a genuine firearm.”
