Man held in connection with wife's death

A SUFFOLK man was today being questioned on suspicion of murdering his 42-year-old wife.

Gareth Lewis, 32, was arrested after Amanda Lewis suffered stomach wounds at her home in Fitzgerald Walk, Bury St Edmunds, yesterday .

Paramedics were called to the address, on the town's Westley Estate, at about 2.45pm, and took Mrs Lewis to the West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, where she later died from her injuries.

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said: "Police have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of murder following the death of a 42-year-old woman from Bury St Edmunds.

"At approximately 2.45pm yesterday, an ambulance was called to an address at Fitzgerald Walk, in Bury St Edmunds, to a woman with stab wounds to her abdomen.

"The 32-year-old man, who is also from Bury St Edmunds, is currently in custody at the town's police station while police continue with their investigations."

Last night, neighbours of the couple said they were shocked by yesterday's incident. They said several residents witnessed an ambulance arrive at the address.

It is believed the couple moved to Suffolk from Leicestershire for work reasons about six years ago.

Neighbours said that both Mr and Mrs Lewis were hard working people. They said Mrs Lewis worked for both the Sainsbury's and Roys of Wroxham stores, in Bury St Edmunds, in recent years.

It is known Mr Lewis worked for the Claas company, in Bury St Edmunds, which makes agriculture machinery, when he first moved to Suffolk.

It is believed he was made redundant about two years ago and has had numerous jobs in and around the town since.

Next-door neighbour Gordon Jones said: "We were out when the incident happened, but everyone around here is shocked and is talking about it. People have been saying Amanda was brought out on a stretcher.

"We are very surprised by all of this. They only got back from a holiday in Portugal a few weeks ago."

Mr Jones' wife, Anna, said: "We are just completely stunned, you just don't expect things like this to happen around here.

"They were always polite and friendly and very neighbourly. She was a very hard working woman and was always pottering around in the garden."
