A MAN has been jailed after more than £1,000 of cigarettes and alcohol were stolen from a village store.

Solomon Loveridge, 25, of no fixed abode, admitted acting as a look out while two accomplices raided the Old Barns Store in Somersham.

The three men left with the cigarettes and alcohol as well as cash from the till and pension books from behind the store's Post Office counter.

Kate Stephenson, prosecuting at South-East Suffolk Magistrates Court yesterday said Loveridge was just as guilty as the man who entered the store.

She said the gang smashed their way through the door in the early hours of February 8.

Miss Stephenson said Loveridge cut himself on broken glass in the door. Police later found Loveridge's blood at the scene.

Graham Skippen, defending, said Loveridge knew he was going to jail and had co-operated with police throughout.

He said Loveridge had not planned the burglary and foolishly allowed himself to be persuaded to take part.

In sentencing Loveridge to five months in jail, magistrates said they had taken into account his early guilty plea.

They said the five-month term was to follow a sentence Loveridge was already serving.
