A MAN has survived a 100ft fall into a river today, amazing his rescuers.

Emergency services were called just after 10.45am after a report that a man, believed to be in his 40s, had fallen from the Humber Bridge into the River Humber and was being swept away by the tide.

Coastguard crews and a rescue helicopter rushed to the area and within 15 minutes the man was recovered from the river and taken to hospital.

Katie Gellatly, a coastguard watch assistant with Humber Maritime and Rescue Coordination Centre, said: “It is very unusual for anybody to be recovered from the River Humber but it is extremely rare for anybody to be recovered alive after surviving a 100ft fall.

“The prompt launch of Humber Rescue meant that the man was not in the water for long, making his chance of survival much greater.”
