A 24-year-old spotted lighting up a spliff in the street by police has admitting possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Christopher McCabe, formerly of Back Hamlet, Ipswich, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before the town’s magistrates.

Prosecutor Tess Mann said the cannabis found on the 24-year-old, who has now moved back to Scotland, had a street value of £345.

The offence occurred on August 3.

John Hughes, representing McCabe, said his client was seen with a group of people and was rolling a joint.

He told police it was cannabis and said they would find more in his bag.

Mr Hughes said selling drugs was a new venture to McCabe.

Part of the reason he was doing it was because he wanted to return to Scotland to start a new life.

Magistrates fined McCabe £200 and ordered him to pay £85 costs as well as £30 to the victims’ fund.

An application for forfeiture and destruction of the drugs was also approved.
