THERE will be music and maybe even dancing in the streets as Woodbridge residents celebrate 50 years of the Queen's reign.

Ideas have been coming in thick and fast for ways to celebrate the Golden Jubilee in the town and a fun-filled programme has now been drawn up.

In a bid to get the real Elizabethan feeling flowing committee members are hoping to set up a market depicting the days when the Queen was first crowned.

So far organisations in the town have not been very forthcoming but councillor Russell Geen, chairman of the jubilee sub-committee is putting out a final plea for people to get involved.

Suggestions of a carnival have already had to be dropped because yet again there is lack of support.

He said: "It would be rather nice if organisations in Woodbridge would have a stall.

"We did it in 1977 for the silver jubilee and it was fantastic with everyone dressed up in Elizabethan costumes.

"I did the Woodbridge festival in 1975 and also got some ideas from that.

"If it went ahead it would really give that Elizabethan feel."

All stalls would be free of charge and any of the proceeds the organisations can keep for themselves.

The celebrations are starting on Saturday June 1 with Market Hill being closed off to traffic during the evening.

Pubs in the area will be providing food and drink to enable revellers to celebrate in whatever style they wish.

On Sunday June 2 a giant picnic in Elmhurst Park is being held with music being provided from the Excelsior Band.

It is also planned that churches in Woodbridge and Melton will move their evening services from inside to out, so one big open-air service can be held in the park following the picnic.

Even though the events will be centred around Market Hill and Elmhurst Park the committee are also intent on decorating The Thoroughfare with balloons and bunting.

Anyone who wants to get involved with the Elizabethan Market or who has any more ideas about what could be organised for the jubilee can contact Chris Walker, Woodbridge Town Council clerk on 01394 383464.
