Willis Towers Watson staff smashes charity Challenge for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Keen employees at Willis Towers Watson dressed down and sold hundreds of books to raise money for children with cancer on the last day of September, which was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Taking the lead on the £170 challenge was long-time CLIC Sargent fundraiser Paul Hicks who has had personal experience of the support provided by CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people.

The figure of £170 is the grant CLIC Sargent provides to families who are given the devastating news their child has cancer. The grant helps with immediate and unexpected costs such as petrol and parking and helps stop cancer costs spiralling.

Paul said: “I took the £170 challenge for CLIC Sargent because the charity was there for me and my family and I’d like to help other families coping with childhood cancer.”

“The day went fantastically well, and the amount raised of £1,300 far exceeded what I had hoped for. It would not have been as successful had it not have been for the vast volumes of books and cakes being donated and all round generosity of my wonderful friends and colleagues at Willis Towers Watson, who kindly allowed us the platform to raise some much needed funds.”

Paul also runs an annual Felixstowe Fives charity golf day for CLIC Sargent at Ufford Park which last weekend, in its 8th year, raised a further £1750.

Daisy Turner, fundraising manager at CLIC Sargent said: “It’s fantastic to see Paul and the generous staff at Willis Towers Watson taking on the challenge and helping families cope with the added costs when a child is diagnosed with cancer.

“Last year CLIC Sargent was able to provide £12,000 in grants to children and young people with cancer in Suffolk alone. Donations made during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month will mean we can continue providing vital practical support to families affected by childhood cancer.”
