SUFFOLK woke today to a covering of frost and sub-zero temperatures across the county - with weathermen predicting more of the same to come.

On the coast it was minus 2C and inland up to minus 5C with drivers forced to scrape windscreens before setting off on their journeys.

Police though said it had been an incident-free start to the day with no crashes or collisions due to the icy weather.

The bitterly cold conditions are sweeping across Europe from Siberia.

Met Office forecasters are confident conditions will stay below average for the next fortnight with maximum daytime temperatures between 2C (36F) and 4C (39F).

East Anglia could experience snow and bitter winds from the east, completing the coldest start to a winter in more than 30 years, and bringing with it a risk of hazardous road conditions and disruption to public transport.

Evening Star weather expert Ken Blowers, said: “It's going to stay cold for the foreseeable future because of a high pressure system centred over Scandinavia.

“Though cold, it has still been dry and bright which is fairly rare for this time of year.

“We haven't seen any rain here for 16 days, and a total of one inch of rain for December is well below average.

“At the end of this week the high pressure system will change position to over Greenland and Iceland. This usually brings a northerly air stream and could mean snow showers.”
