A SUFFOLK motorist was today in a stable condition in hospital after being stabbed in an apparent road rage incident.

Police are hunting a male motorist after the woman was stabbed in her car on an isolated road.

The victim, who comes from the Sudbury area, underwent emergency surgery after the incident on a road between Little and Great Cornard. She had been stabbed in the stomach.

Mystery surrounds the lead-up to the stabbing, but police said they were keen to trace the driver of an "old, red car" driven by a man in his early 40s.

The drama unfolded at about 8.15pm last night when the woman, driving a silver Ford Focus, called police from the scene saying she had been stabbed.

The police helicopter helped locate her.

When they arrived, she was drifting in and out of consciousness and was immediately rushed to Colchester General Hospital.

She was then taken into theatre for an emergency operation.

Insp Mike Hinshelwood, of Suffolk Police, said her condition was serious but the injuries were not initially thought to be life-threatening.

He said they could not speculate on the possible motives for the attack until detectives had been able to speak to the injured woman.

He added: "We are particularly keen to trace an old red car and male occupant in his early 40s, who was clean shaven and believed to be involved in this incident."
