BOYRACERS are set to be driven away from Staples superstore in Ipswich by a car park security revamp.

Staples manager Phil Greetham says he is determined to put the brakes on the speed freaks who have plagued his store's car park for months.

And he has asked his company's money men to finance a series of measures which he hopes will rid the Portman Road car park of its unwanted late-night residents.

He said: "I'm not going to let this drop. The most serious side of this problem is that it's an accident waiting to happen.

"When they are racing round the car park at 20 or 30mph, they've just got to catch one person off guard coming out of the store.

"We're going to have to take this to extremes to stop the problem."

Mr Greetham said he had examined a number of schemes which will stop speeding in the car park and prevent the boy-racers from gaining access in the first place.

He highlighted speed bumps among a number of potential speed calming measures.

And he had identified a system of lockable gates which could be controlled from inside Staples or the next-door Fitness First gym.

Mr Greetham said he was not sure which of the measures would get the green light, but he was confident the situation would be resolved.

He said: "Whatever happens it will solve the problem, because I won't let it drop.

"I have a duty to protect my staff and we cannot maintain the amount of criminal damage being done to the site.

"It's not just that they are on the site, it's the massive amount of money we're having to spend to keep the site acceptable."

Mr Greetham said he also hoped to install CCTV and high-powered floodlights as another layer of protection for the site.
