Building 2,000 new homes on British Telecom's Adastral Park complex at Martlesham Heath will need a 60 million cash injection into roads, schools and other facilities.

MARTLESHAM: Building 2,000 new homes on British Telecom's Adastral Park complex at Martlesham Heath will need a 60 million cash injection into roads, schools and other facilities.

A new report out today details what various authorities say will need to be spent to provide services for the huge development.

BT wants to build up to 2,000 new homes, 60,000 sq m of extra employment area to create around 2,000 jobs, a health centre, community centre, shops, caf, pub and takeaway.

There would also be an hotel, energy centre, and public park.

Education chiefs, according to the report, say an 8 million primary school for 420 pupils would be needed, and a 25m new secondary school for 1,050 students, though this would not be needed at the start of the development.

Transport officials at the Highways Agency and county council estimate 13.75m would needed for road improvements, including changes to four junctions on the A12 between Seven Hills and Martlesham, plus new road connections to Newbourne Road/Heath Road/Waldringfield Road, pedestrian and cycleway links, and extra public transport.

EDF Energy says the national grid will have to be upgraded to cope with the development at a cost of 5.5, and Anglian Water says a significant sum will need to be spent on water provision and sewerage.

Other costs will include healthcare, more police, play areas and allotments.

Suffolk Coastal council, which is dealing with the project, says the findings of the study are “much as expected” and most of the costs will be paid by the developers.

Head of Planning Services Philip Ridley said: “The findings of the studies provide a clear insight into the scale and timing of new infrastructure provision that will be required to meet the needs of new residents and for certain elements highlights additional demands deriving from new employment proposals.”
