A musician who has battled depression all of his life is putting on a concert to raise money for a mental health charity.

Keith Sadler hopes the event at the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket on November 26 will encourage people suffering from emotional problems in silence to seek the help and support they need.

Mr Sadler, who was brought up in Ipswich and now lives in Stowmarket, said he was inspired to organise the fundraiser in aid of Suffolk Mind after discovering how many musicians had gone through similar difficulties to him.

“I have written a couple of songs about my personal struggle and noticed quite a lot of artists coming up to me after I performed saying they have gone through similar things as well,” he added. “I was quite struck by the number of creative people, especially musicians, going through mental health issues.”

The 35-year-old, who released an album called Savour Life earlier this year, said he had lived with chronic depression since a youngster but it started having a more serious impact on his life when his physical health took a turn for the worse in 2009.

Mr Sadler had a mini stroke, or a transient ischemic attack, and was later diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as ME.

“Music helped me a lot through that and has given me a light at the end of the tunnel and I had a lot of help from charities like Mind and the NHS,” he added. “So I thought it would be cool to get some of us together and try and do something to recognise that and give back a little bit and raise awareness. Hopefully it will help a few people out there struggling silently to make contact with Suffolk Mind.”

The concert will start at 7pm and will feature Mr Sadler, Ellie Jamison, Tilly Dalglish, Kevin Walford and Kelly Pritchard, Daniel Storey, Andrea King, Holly Johnston and James Morgan.

Tickets are £5 and can be bought from the John Peel Centre in person or via its website.
