POLICE today admitted they are baffled by reports of an unconscious woman being carried through a Suffolk village by a group of men.

Extensive searches have been made of the area surrounding Station Road, Bentley after passers by alerted the force to the potentially suspicious act, at 4.30pm on Tuesday.

But this has failed to reveal the identity of the woman or the men and police today said they are continuing to treat the incident as unexplained.

Detective Superintendent Andy Footer said: "There have been no reports of a missing person within the immediate counties, and there has been no-one admitted to hospital that would account for the whereabouts of the woman."

Station Road was cordoned off yesterday, while officers, using trained police dogs as well as the police helicopter, scoured the area.

"All searches proved negative," said Det Sup Footer.

"We take all incidents such as this very seriously, but so far nothing has come of our enquiries and until any more information comes to light, we are treating this as an unexplained incident."

Police would still like to speak to the people involved in the incident, as well as the drivers of a silver Vauxhall and a blue Smart car, that were parked nearby.

Anyone with information should contact Det Supt Footer at Sudbury Police Station on 01284 774300.
